Good Mail

I got out to the post office today and mailed off a boat load of packages and letters…15 to be exact…10 packages and 5 letters…the greatest part? that NO ONE was behind me the whole time…I always get all anxious-like when I’m at the post office and there is a line of like 5 people behind me…and it seems like I can never pick the right time of day…well today was my lucky day…wooty hoo!

This morning I got an amazing magazine in the mail…it is the summer 2010 issue of Somerset Studio Magazine…I’ve heard great things about this magazine before but have never seen one…I did a private swap with someone on Swap-Bot…I sent her a cartridge of unused Polaroid film and a cute pencil case for this magazine…the first thing you notice about this magazine is the quality…it just feels nice…

Then you open it up and you are hit with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration…this issue features a lot of different people who art journal, and their techniques…

This women uses a black paper journal to get a different look from her mediums…I couldn’t attempt to draw like her but I sure do appreciate looking at it…I am amazed at the different paints, markers, and pencils they use to create their art…

I’ve been using mainly sharpies, pens, highlighters, crayons, and occasionally some scrapbook paper…I think if I had a room that I could keep all the mess in I would try more paint techniques…but as you will see later, trying this kind of thing is A MESS! and I simply can not handle living in that…even in the name of art…

This women is my favorite so far (I’ve only made it half way through the magazine)…she makes the edges of her paper uneven to make the book more interesting and also uses shaped pages like the hands below…those are two free floating pieces that give you just enough of a glimpse to want to know what is underneath them…

Here is my first creation after being inspired by what I’ve read so far…I went through the pages of magazines I’ve ripped out and made a collage that I then accented with sharpies and crayons…I like how it came out…and really feel like it captured something I am feeling right now…

Here is my second act of inspiration…I decided to decoupage tissue paper onto the inside of a cereal box…I’m not sure how in love I am with the process, but I know that I need to work some more on it before I give up…maybe I need to add some more layers…and I think mom has some paints…since I already have the mess started I might as well try painting out before I clean up!

My friend Robin sent me a set of these great birdie address labels from Vista Print…I LOVE them…and have been out of nice address labels for a while now…of course they came with a wonderfully long pen pal letter that I am excited to answer this week…

I think I almost died when I opened this matchbox up I got from England…

I tagged Birdguhl on Swap-Bot for a vampire survival kit matchbox…I’m not into the whole vampire thing but it is such a huge part of our culture right now I really thought it would be great to have it represented in my collection…and man am I glad I did…she did an amazing job, and told me it it is only the 4th one she had made

*

the detail was out of control…there are 3 cloves of garlic and three little wooden stakes she made herself…this is in the top three of my favorite matchboxes I’ve ever received!

yea for great mail…if any of you have not checked out Swap-Bot please do! it is fun, and you can do 1 swap at a time if you want…just try it out, I promise you’ll love it…if you want to try being a pen pal, just comment and we can totally write, I ordered a bunch of fun stationary the other day because someone was having an amazing sale…it has got to be mailed to someone right?
